Movie Night ~ Short Docs on Cuban Music
November 22 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
The Other Guantanamo follows the HotHouse Chicago-Guantánamo Blues Exchange to Guantánamo Province, where Chicago musicians and Cuban musicians share techniques, stylings and experiences and, above all, their love of music. Through these events, a story emerges about a place and its little-known musical traditions. Particular to the region and showcased in The Other Guantánamo is Changüí, an Afro- Cuban “roots” music that originated in the early 19th-century sugar cane refineries and rural mountain slave communities.
Vida Buena features Los Matanzeros, an extended family band in Matanzas that performs Cuban musical folklore, bringing a 300-year-old tradition to life. Shot on 16mm, this portrait of a community is a human mixtape, piecing together interviews, public and private performance against a symphonic urban backdrop.
