Movie Night! ~ De Cierta Manera (One Way or Another)
November 22, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
There’s been a change in the Friday night program! We’ll be screening De Cierta Manera (One Way or Another), the last film and celebrated masterpiece of Afro-Cuban filmmaker Sara Gómez. The film takes place in Havana in the 1960s. Intercutting documentary-style footage with a fictional love story, Gómez creates an intimate portrait of a couple amid a transforming society.
Gómez was a revolutionary filmmaker with intersecting concerns: the Afro-Cuban community and its cultural traditions, women’s issues, the treatment of marginalized sectors of society, and the role of family within the context of the revolution and workers’ rights. For its time, the film was extremely radical both in form and content. Sara Gómez remains one of the most significant Latin American filmmakers.
