Korean Film Night – Aimless Bullet by Yu Hyun-mok

Yu Hyun-mok’s Aimless Bullet (1960) is often recognized as one of the masterpieces of early Korean cinema. Based on the novel of the same name by Lee Beom-seon, Aimless Bullet captures the downbeat portrayal of post-Korean war society in the 50s. The film centers around an extended family; Cheol-Ho, a married accountant with a pregnant wife, Young-Ho, an unemployed war veteran, a sister who turns to the streets, an ill mother suffering from aftermaths of the war, etc. Despite all the efforts to improve their situation, their life remains despondent without any exit, and the ill mother’s constant screaming of “Let’s go!” haunts them. The film was initially banned on release by the government because of its bleak depiction of the postwar society with no attempts to gloss over or disguise it.
