Movie Night! Jiseul by O Meul (2012)
September 6, 2019 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm
Jiseul (2012) by O Muel is an exquisite reenactment of a massacre that took place during the Korean postwar period in a beautiful island called Jeju, South Korea.
In November 1948, when the Korean government and the American military regime issue an order to evict “communists” from Jeju Island, the military invades a peaceful village. Some villagers flee to a cave and hide for 60 days from armed soldiers. As time passes, they begin to suffer from severe cold and hunger. They try their best to stay calm by making jokes and holding on to the hope that this is almost over but eventually begin to fall apart.
How do we digest a painful history into a meaningful nutrient for the present and the future? Please come and enjoy the powerful yet tender black/white film, that won everyone’s heart at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival; the film was unanimously awarded the World Cinema Dramatic Grand Jury Prize.
Free screening followed by discussions with light refreshments
